The Evolution of Diversity in Avian Territorial Systems

چکیده

W HAT are the conditions which facilitate or hinder the evolution of territoriality? No generally accepted solution to this problem has yet been found-perhaps because too specific an answer has been sought for too general a question. Instead, the diversity of systems of territorial and other aggressive behavior has come to be well appreciated, as evidenced in recent reviews of territoriality (e.g., Kuroda, 1960; Carpenter, 1953; Hinde, 1956), and the impossibility of providin g a specific answer applicable to all types of territoriality is now realized. Arguments over which are the primary selection pressures leading to certain types of territoriality continue, however, as shown in the recent contributions bearing on the “function” of territoriality by Stenger (1958)) WynneEdwards (1962), Kalela (1958)) Kuroda (1960), Peters (1962)) and others. The present paper offers a new orientation to the problem by presenting a general theory for the evolution of territoriality with special reference to its diversity among species. Since most of the previous theories have already been shown to be untenable or severely limited (see especially Carpenter, 1958; Tinbergen, 1957; and Hinde, 1956, for criticism of them), little attention will be given to them here.

The congruence between matrilineal genetic (mtDNA) and geographic diversity of Iranians and the territorial populations

Objective(s):From the ancient era, emergence of Agriculture in the connecting region of Mesopotamia and the Iranian plateau at the foothills of the Zagros Mountains, made Iranian gene pool as an important source of populating the region. It has differentiated the population spread and different language groups. In order to trace the maternal genetic affinity between Iranians and other populatio...

Estimating microsatellite based genetic diversity in Rhode Island Red chicken

This study aimed to estimate microsatellite based genetic diversity in two lines (the selected RIRS and control line RIRC) of Rhode Island Red (RIR) chicken. Genomic DNA of 24 randomly selected birds maintained at Central Avian Research Institute (India) and 24 microsatellite markers were used. Microsatellite alleles were determined on 6% urea-PAGE, recorded using GelDoc system and the samples ...

Evolving nonapeptide mechanisms of gregariousness and social diversity in birds.

Of the major vertebrate taxa, Class Aves is the most extensively studied in relation to the evolution of social systems and behavior, largely because birds exhibit an incomparable balance of tractability, diversity, and cognitive complexity. In addition, like humans, most bird species are socially monogamous, exhibit biparental care, and conduct most of their social interactions through auditor...

Detection and Molecular Characterization of Gammacoronavirus in Quail Population in Iran

BACKGROUND: Gammacoronaviruses, which are single-stranded, positive-sense RNA viruses, are responsible for a wide variety of existing and emerging diseases in birds. The Gammacoronaviruses primarily infect avian hosts. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of Gammacoronaviruses in quail population in Iran. METHODS: In the period from 2016 to 2018, samples from 47 qua...

Full-length Characterization of S1 Gene of Iranian QX Avian Infectious Bronchitis Virus Isolates, 2015

Background and Aims: Avian infectious bronchitis (IB) has prevalent in the most chicken farms during recent years, in spite of the IB vaccination program which has been widely performed in Iran. To better understand the molecular epidemiology of IBV in Iran, the full length sequences of S1 gene of Iranian QX IBVs were determined and phylogenetic analysis was done using some sequences of IBV. M...
